The Contextual Factors Related to Risk for Unwanted Sexual Contact in the Department of Defense Active Component in 2023 report examines the extent to which men’s and women’s risk for unwanted sexual contact may be higher in unhealthy workplace contexts using data from the 2023 Workplace and Gender Relations Survey of Military Members (2023 WGR). Risk for unwanted sexual contact was compared between unhealthy and healthy workplace contexts represented by five indicators: sexual harassment, sex discrimination, tolerance for sexual harassment in the military workplace, unit support for intervention, and leader support for intervention. With the exception of Space Force, Department of Defense (DoD) Active component women’s and men’s 2023 estimated prevalence rates of unwanted sexual contact were higher in unhealthy workplace contexts compared to healthy workplace contexts. These results speak to the potential effectiveness of improving Service members’ workplace contexts through prevention efforts focused on strengthening command climates across the DoD in order to reduce experiences unwanted sexual contact.
