As part of previous work, the Defense Personnel and Security Research Center (PERSEREC) researchers conducted a systematic review of academic, professional, and government publications to identify evidence-based best practices for security programs associated with active shooter prevention and response, managing threats made by students, post-crisis family reunification, and mental health interventions (Beneda et al., 2020). To help prevent school violence and keep schools safe for learning, the resulting best practices for kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12) public schools are presented here. County and school district superintendents as well as other school administrators are encouraged to review their schools’ safety plans for preventing and responding to school violence to ensure plans (a) are comprehensive and (b) reflect best practices in school security.
