Open-ended questions were included in the 2009 Workplace and Equal Opportunity Survey of Active Duty Members (2009 WEOA), which was conducted February 2 to April 30, 2009. The 2009 WEOA included two questions that asked active duty members to what extent gangs are problems at their installation/ship and in the local community around their installation. The response options for these questions ranged on a five point scale from “Not at all” to “Very large extent.” Overall, 15% of Service members indicated that gang activities were a problem2 at their installation/ship, whereas 40% indicated that gang activities were a problem in the local community. Service members were also asked if someone in the past 12 months had asked them to participate in prohibited organizations/activities including joining a racist/extremist organization, participating in racist/extremist activities, joining a gang, participating in gang activities, and participating in a hate crime3. Only 1-2% indicated that any of these scenarios had occurred.
